The Number One Pond Building Question!

What Kind of Pond Should I be building?

Of course, the answer depends entirely on you. Where are you looking to build your pond? What size pond interests you? Is cost a factor? Is labor and pond maintenance a factor? Are you planning on a do-it-yourself job? These are all questions you need to ask yourself before you start shopping. Some of the questions are simpler then others. If you have a tiny backyard, you're more likely to be interested in a small pond.

Are you planning to have fish? The type and number of fish you want will decide the size and dimensions of your pond. Large fish such as Koi fish will require quite a large pond. They will need a pond that is at least 3 feet deep. 5 feet in some deeper areas if you plan on over-wintering your pond. (That is, leaving the fish in the pond during the winter months)

Small ponds are generally called Starter Ponds. How small is small? Well if it looks small then it's small. It's as simple as that. Generally, middle size ponds are what are normally labeled water gardens. These are the most popular as they are essentially an oasis of water, birds and plants all at a somewhat reasonable price, labor, and maintenance. And then you have your large ponds that hold large fish such as Koi fish.

Of course, the smaller the pond the cheaper, easier, and quicker it is to build. I don't have to tell you that price and labor grow with pond size. However, keep in mind that over maintenance is actually lower for larger ponds as they require less frequent cleaning.

Consider your options and do some research on local supply stores and services. Remember, with ponds, size doesn't matter if you do it right!
