It is very prominent from the above table that the core population who are living in Kolkata has reached almost in equilibrium position. The problem, which is bothering most, is the non-residing population. They are not using Kolkata for their living purpose but still depended upon Kolkata for their earning. In fact almost 9% of West Bengal’s population during daytime is in Kolkata city in an area of about 100 Km2., which is just a dot, compared to total West Bengal’s area. This is a unique feature of Kolkata city. This unveils a gruesome and serious issue. The area surrounding to Kolkata is not developing properly and due to this reason the people travel a tiresome distance to Kolkata to earn their living in daytime and return at night. Those areas can’t satisfy the localized job, food and shelter demand of the population. They crowd to Kolkata desperately to get those demands. That person who can’t cover the distance daily set up a slum in the vicinity and contributes to the BPL population of the city. Presently the slum population of Kolkata contributes about 32.55% of the total population and 70% of the slum people live below poverty level.
