New from Japan: the mind-controlled wheelchair

This one's already a bit of a golden oldie in the blogosphere, but it's a slow news week in Tokyo, so here goes. Researchers at the University of Electro-Communications said they've developed a prototype wheelchair that responds to brainwave patterns. Use the Force, Luke!

The system employs a skull cap (hopefully not reused from Old Sparky) rigged with sensors that "read" your brainwaves. Think "left" and you'll probably go left. Think "right" and you'll probably go right. At the moment, the Think-o-Charismatic, or whatever it's called, gets it right about 80 percent of the time. Which means you'll have about five minutes before you end up under that bus or down that flight of stairs.
