Real products and information products can earn you handsome rewards. The trick is to figure out which one applies to your business. Basically, the products that businesses sell online can be broken down into two categories: Real products and Information products You may only want to sell one of these products for your business, or you may wish to sell both. It all depends on your field of expertise and how you choose to sell your business to customers. Below is a basic breakdown of real and information products, as well as the general pros and cons of each. Real products include any physical item such as CD's, artwork, candles, games, fictional books, etc. that you would send via standard mail. Pros * Marketing - Marketing a real product for your business can be much easier than an information product. For instance, depending on what you sell, you could send out samples to local companies or stores that may choose to buy your products if they like them. * Materialism - Many Internet users are more interested in purchasing real items than they are in educational material. This gives you the opportunity to show off your products and tell consumers why your item is a must have. Cons * Competition- the chances are that you are not the first business to sell the real product around which your company is based. If you happen to be selling the same type of merchandise that a well recognized store carries, you may have a hard time convincing people why they should purchase your product instead. Another problem is that depending on the items you sell, you may not be able to ask for a lower price than the competition, as your budget may not allow it. * Featuring more than your products - when you sell physical products you have the opportunity to link with other companies and sell their merchandise. While you can make a profit off this, the ones receiving the real revenue is the company you are selling the products for. It's always best to sell your own items so you can reap all the rewards. Informationproducts are those that include personal services such as consulting, assistance, etc. It also includes the selling of products such as how-to-guides and non-fiction books. Information products can be sent to customers by standard mail, but transactions often occur over the internet. Pros * Repeat Customers - a customer is more likely to return to you, and recommend you to others, if they like the information you sell. It takes a lot to trust someone, and even more to leave a lasting impression. * Originality - When selling an information product the more unique and personalized you make it, the better chance it has selling. You can make the customer believe that what they will be buying is something they will find no where else. Your personal skills can make your success. Cons * Marketing - it takes time for people to trust the services or information you are selling them. They want to know that you are an expert and they can learn from you. * Pricing - A lot of personal time and energy goes into the creating of information products, which will make you want to charge a respectable amount of money for your labor. Unfortunately, before you are recognized for your credibility and expertise, you will not be able to charge the amount you deserve unless you plan on sinking your company. When all is said and done, it doesn't really matter if you choose to sell both or one type of product over another. All that matters is that you believe in the product you are selling and know your target market. You need to pour your heart and soul into what you sell if you hope to impress your customers and keep them coming back for more.
